Did you go to summer camp as a kid?

To contact us Click HERE
Did you ever go to summer camp when you were little? I was always a bit jealous of those kids who got to spend weeks on end in the woods, swimming in the lake and climbing trees and making s'mores and singing songs around the camp fire. Well, thanks to Diane Falanga's P.S. I Still Hate It Here! More Kids' Letters From Camp, we get a behind-the-scenes look inside the good, bad and mostly hilarious world of summer camp -- all from the young campers' point of view...
How awesome are these letters? Oh, the minds of children! You can read more missives on camping life in Falanga's first book, P.S. I Hate It Here. The inspiration for both books? The camp letters Falanga once received from her own eight-year-old daughter! xoxo

P.S. More book love, including A History of the World In 1,000 Objects, When My Baby Dreams, A Labor of Love and Dear Photograph.

Question of the Week: Question #30

To contact us Click HERE
It take us awhile to see the joy right in front of us sometimes, doesn't it? Those little unexpected bursts of happiness that pop up in our lives without us even recognizing them. But when we do finally notice them? We have no idea how we could have possibly missed them in the first place. Have a question? I'd love to hear it, so feel free to email me (mellow1422 [at] aol) or ask me on Facebook or Twitter, friends! Today's question is from Anarchist Girl Scout, who asks...

What's been your most unexpected source of happiness?
After a morning of shopping, an outing which should have resulted in the purchase of a few small goldfish for our new tank, my sister gallantly burst in the house revealing a smile bigger than a child’s face on Christmas morning.

We bought a kitten,” she exclaimed.

Not two minutes later, in waltzes my mother carrying the prized loot. Inside the tiny cat carrier sat said prized loot peeking out at the world. A calico little fur ball of orange, black and white. Piercing yellow/green eyes. Four miniature paws.
Now given that our last adventure into finding our other cat, Harry, a companion ended with a little cat fight in which the fur was indeed flying, I stood a bit skeptical at the sight of Stella -- the name we'd already bestowed on our new friend.

We’ll try it for two weeks,” instructed my mother.

And so began our experiment. If it was successful, I knew it would be akin to shifting the continents, as Harry is an antisocial boy. As we let Stella out of her confined quarters, she explored what would be her world for the next 14 days: My bedroom. At first, she seemed content, peaceful even.
But by the tenth day, she was raring to go. To explore her world beyond those four white walls. So we opened the door. Out she scampered. At first, she and Harry avoided each other like the plague, then they got within a few feet of each other and finally, they began to look at each other. First out of fear. Then out of genuine curiosity.

They jumped together. They crouched at the living room window to watch people, cars and other pets zoom past. They even muttered loud meows as they ran across the house together.
It was clear: Stella had brought life and laughter into our house. Without my father, our house can feel like a hollow tomb sometimes. But now for the first time, our smiles and glee didn’t feel fake or forced. We, like those two cats, were feeling genuine happiness – and curiosity about the big wide world. It looked like our little experiment was a success. For everyone.

I've been thinking about endings for the past couple of months. Maybe it's because my job as a newspaper adviser came to an end? Whatever the reason, I've come realized something: Maybe what's more heartbreaking is not the actual moment something ends -- whether it's a relationship or a job -- but the moment it clicks in your mind, that moment you go, "Wow, this is really over." Does that make sense, friends? xoxo
I thought this would be so easy
I've said hello to a thousand goodbyes
All packed up, put the memories away
All that's left to do is leave
But standing here, my feet have never felt so heavy

I didn't want to go, but my heart knew it was over
Some things just aren't meant to last
You can pray for a sunny day, but the skies will pour down on you sometimes
'Cause when I was standing at that fork in the road, I looked back over my shoulder and realized...it's over

I can still hear his voice in the back of my mind
He told me stories of forever, just the two of us
He told me I was beautiful
And for a minute, I almost believed him
I stood frozen in that one moment in time

I didn't want to go, but my heart knew it was over
Some things just aren't meant to last
You can pray for a sunny day, but the skies will pour down on you sometimes
'Cause when I was standing at that fork in the road, I looked back over my shoulder and realized...it's over

Just one more smile, one more "how are you?"
One more laugh, if only I could go back
Just one more time

I didn't want to go, but my heart knew it was over
Some things just aren't meant to last
You can pray for a sunny day, but the skies will pour down on you sometimes
'Cause when I was standing at that fork in the road, I looked back over my shoulder and realized...it's over

I didn't want to go, but my heart knew it was over
Some things just aren't meant to last
You can pray for a sunny day, but the skies will pour down on you sometimes
'Cause when I was standing at that fork in the road, I looked back over my shoulder and realized...it's over

He told me I was beautiful
And for a minute, I almost believed him

Would You Rather: Have more female friends or more male friends?

To contact us Click HERE
We've asked that age-old question: Can men and women just be friends? We've also waxed poetic about the frustrations of the friend zone. Well, today, let's look at a new question researchers are asking: Should men and women even be friends in the first place?

Researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire turned to the platonic, opposite-sex friendships of some 400 adults, who ranged in age 18 to 52.

The findings, recently published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, revealed that at least some level of attraction if unavoidable. And, men are more attracted to their female friends than women are to their male friends.

"I'd venture to say, based on all our data, that in the majority of friendships, there's at least a low level of attraction," says Dr. April Bleske-Rechek, the study's principal researcher. "And if it's coming more from one friend than the other, it's probably the guy."

Who knew?! So, I'm curious, friends: Would you rather have more female friends or male friends? Do you have more of one than the other now? Have you tried having more of one in the past? How did things go? What are the pros and cons of male vs. female friends? xoxo

P.S. A he said/she said debate on the issue.

Kate wears white for Garter Day.

Once again Kate Middleton and the entire Royal Family looked fabulous for Garter Day 2012.  She joined her stepmother-in-law Camilla and Prince Edward's wife Sophie to watch the ceremony in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

HRH Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge wore a Reiss dress and an Alexander McQueen cotton and wool-blend pique coat.

She paired the dress and coat with a L.K. Bennett Natalie Natural box clutch and Sledge Pumps.

Doesn't Her Majesty look adorable with Prince Phillip?

I love Kate's hair in this photo! Adorable!

Kate's hat is by Jane Corbett.

Do you like Kate's Garter Day outfit?

update your wardrobe with C Wonder.

C Wonder is a great site to update your wardrobe (and home) without the J.Crew or Pottery Barn price.  The site is full of preppy, fashionable items.  I think C Wonder gives you the style of J.Crew with just a little bit knocked off the price tag (which won my heart immediately).
I really love their preppy (and nautical) jewelry.  I think I need to order one of these knotted rope bracelets ASAP!

I love the iKat trend and these items are a great way to bring the trend to your home!

iKat Nesting Bowls (set of 3)

Another one of my favorite trends is tortoise shell.  These tortoise cap ballet flats are a great way to add a little bit of tortoise to any outfit.  These flats are perfect for work or school.  I love how flats can easily transition from professional to fun!

This striped tee dress is adorable for summer and looks a lot like this dress from J.Crew, but with a much better price tag!  I love how they pair it with a belt and tan sandals.

I love wearing sleeveless shirts with shorts during the summer.  It's perfect for the hot summer weather, but looks a little more put together than a spaghetti strap shirt.  I love that this one adds a nautical touch with seahorses.

Sleeveless Buttoned Shirt

Colored jeans are a huge trend right now and I love it!  However, I haven't quite jumped on the bandwagon yet... mainly because the price for some jeans is just a little too much for me (since we don't know how long this trend will last).  These C Wonder skinny jeans are much more affordable, but equally as stylish.

Have you shopped at C Wonder?

designer look alikes : flats

If you have been a reader for awhile you know that I am a little obsessed with Kate Spade and Tory Burch.  I own a few pairs of Tory Burch flats (that I got at the outlet) and I do think they are worth the price you pay (for some of them... the limited edition ones are just insane!).  But, unless it's a classic pair like brown or black or something you know you'll wear all the time, I don't think it's smart to throw your life savings into a pair of shoes.
I am a huge fan of everything Kate Spade, but I don't get the opportunity to buy most of items that I like because of the outrageously high price tag.  Last spring I fell in love with these Kate Spade Tipsy flats with the pink cap-toe {worn by Bryce Dallas Howard in last years KS campaign}.  After all, a girl can never have too much pink in her wardrobe, right?  Plus, they are just so darn cute and trendy!  Naturally, they sold out quickly and did not go on sale (in pink).
But, don't worry girls, I have found a solution to our fashion dilemma.  One that will make your wallet and your closet very happy!  These Lucky Ballerina flats for $24.90!  Now, that's a price I can live with!!!!  Don't you think look so similar... you'll think twice next time you see a fancy designer shoe with a crazy high price tag!

Since I will be graduating college soon, I have been trying to think about buying items that can be used as "business attire".  When I first saw these Kate Spade Tabitha flats a few months ago {mentioned here} I fell in love with them.  They are trendy (like the ones above), but still appropriate to wear to work.  And, I think the classic tan and black combination looks so professional!  Yet, once again, the $225 price tag hit me like a ton of bricks and thus I did not purchase the shoes.  Luckily, Old Navy has a pair of $22 flats that look almost identical!

A few months ago I ordered these Lucky Emmie flats in pink.  They are great, because I did not want to spend $178 on hot pink flats, since I know I won't wear them all the time.  They are kind of stiff, but as I wear them they seem to be getting better.  But, they are still worth it since they were only $59!
Last year I purchased a pair of Tory Burch Eddie Ballet flats.  They were a little pricy, but they are the most comfortable pair of flats that I own!  I have a very difficult time find shoes that fit because I have a small foot... so Tory flats often work very well for me when others don't.  But, these Lucky flats are a fabulous alternative and will save your wallet!

Want to add a little bit of glitter to your life?  I recommend these Steve Madden Kinnetic Glitter flats for only $39.99.  Aren't they so fun?

S'mores Teacher Gift

My fantastic aunt is a veteran elementary school teacher. So when I asked for a unique end-of-the-year Teacher Gift, she shared this WONDERFUL idea! Seriously, this comes together SO quick!Graham crackers, Hershey chocolate bars, and marshmallows!
I used the cute flat marshmallows that are specifically for s'mores.  (found them at WalMart)
Here is the darling saying that ties the whole gift together:

An apple isn't good enoughfor a teacher as sweet as you,'cause you make learning so much funwith exciting things to do!
So this s'more is just to thank youin a sweet and sincere way,for all you do to help me learns'more and s'more each day!
Isn't that the cutest?!My aunt said she loved receiving a thoughtful gift that wasn't something she had to keep hold of.There's only so many ceramic apples that fit on your desk, right?!  LOL!
Here is the digital card I made using this s'more kit by Whimsy Primsy. It's on sale for only $2!
We printed it as a 4x6 photo and then attached to my son's hand-written note with an eyelet & ribbon. This is a "sweet" gift to give to show your appreciation to those wonderful teachers!Give as is, or stuff a gift card in the bag too!

Shrunken Apple Heads!

To contact us Click HERE
I remember a fantastic craft my mom let us do when we were little kids:SHRUNKEN APPLE HEADS!Ideally, I think this would be great in the fall when you have excess apples falling off your trees, but we didn't want to wait that long! Have the parent peel the skins off the apples...
Then hand the kids butter knives and let them start carving a face into their apples:)
All the extra 'knicks' and 'bumps' add character!
My 3-yr-old took lots of enjoyment in the fact that I was letting her (encouraging her) to cut with a knife...yikes! Make sure to eat the parts you carve off!
I put our apples on bamboo skewers and wrote the kids' names on the end
so we would know "whose was whose".We set the apples out on our back patio table to let the sun start the shriveling process!
Then we waited SEVEN whole DAYS!It seemed like an eternity to the kids,
but they made sure to check the shrinking progress every day:)Finally, today, we brought in our Shrunken Apple Heads!

I drew some cartoon clothes on cardstock, the kids colored them, & then cut them out.I used a hole-punch at the top & bottom, and we skewered on our apples' wardrobe:) They really come to life!No really, the kids couldn't keep them still:) They truly have their own personalities!
The kids convinced me to draw some more outfits
to make their apple heads into an astronaut, a ballerina, & a surfer.
So do you have apples that are already bruised or past-their-prime?Don't toss 'em, SHRINK 'EM!

Would you wear matching outfits with your partner?

To contact us Click HERE
Last week, the Today show interviewed Mel and Joey Schwanke. The couple, who have been married for 64 years, shared their secrets to wedded bliss. So, what's the thread that has tied them together all these years? They always wear matching outfits. Joey has 146 dresses and her husband, Mel, has 146 ties to match. The idea came about years ago when their dressmaker had cloth leftover from unused belts. Now, the couple say, people expect to see their matching attire. "We go to church on Sunday morning, and they check us both out to be sure that we match," says Mel. Check out their full interview here.

How cute is that? Would you ever do this, friends? Do you do it now? Do you know anyone who does? xoxo

P.S. Remember this Switcheroo series?
